6G Research and Development is Fully Promoted, and There is a Wide Space for integrated Applications

 


Under the guidance of the National 6G Technology Research and Development Promotion Working Group and the General Expert Group, the 2023 Global 6G Technology Conference jointly sponsored by the Future Mobile Communications Forum and Purple Mountain Laboratory was held in Nanjing recently. Industry insiders believe that 6G will support the multi-dimensional perception of people, machines and things, ubiquitous intelligent connection, and empower the digital transformation of the whole society with the ultimate performance of strong connection, strong computing, strong intelligence and strong security. At present, the development of 6G is in the window period of the formation of vision requirements and the selection of key technologies. It is necessary to effectively gather consensus on 6G research and development, technology, scenarios, and standardization, cultivate a globally consistent 6G concept, and expand the space for international cooperation.

Comprehensively promote technology research and development

6G is the sixth-generation mobile communication standard, also known as the sixth-generation mobile communication technology. At present, my country is accelerating the research and development of 6G technology.

Zhang Guangjun, vice minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology, stated at the 2023 Global 6G Technology Conference that my country's 6G ultra-large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), terahertz communication, synaesthesia integration, endogenous AI communication, deterministic network, satellite-ground integrated network, etc. Important progress has been made in key technologies.

my country attaches great importance to the development of 6G. The national "14th Five-Year Plan" and the "14th Five-Year Plan" Digital Economy Development Plan have made relevant deployments, including "forward-looking layout of 6G network technology reserves", "increasing support for 6G technology research and development, and actively Participate in the promotion of 6G international standardization work", etc.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology led the establishment of the IMT-2030 (6G) promotion group to systematically promote 6G requirements, technologies, standards, and international cooperation. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently proposed to comprehensively promote the research and development of 6G technology; Jin Zhuanglong, Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said that my country will give full play to its super-large-scale market advantages and the advantages of a complete industrial system, concentrate efforts on production, education, research and application, strengthen international cooperation, and accelerate 6G research and development.

Relevant companies are also actively promoting 6G research and development. Recently, the "6G Requirements and Design Considerations" report jointly led by China Mobile, Vodafone, and US Cellular was officially released. The report defines 6G requirements from the perspective of operators, including new requirements such as digital inclusion, energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, and flexible deployment evolution paths, and proposes 6G system architecture and design considerations.

It is reported that in recent years, China Mobile has deeply participated in the related work of my country's IMT-2030 (6G) promotion group, undertaken 10 national key research and development projects such as 6G intelligent network architecture and wireless air interface AI, and led the proposal of "digital twins, smart ubiquitous" 6G vision.

Broad space for fusion applications

The development of 6G is expected to further open up the converged application space. According to the white paper "6G Typical Scenarios and Key Capabilities" released by the IMT-2030 (6G) Promotion Group, it is estimated that by 2040, IoT terminals will show explosive growth of hundreds of billions, and the number of connections will account for more than 90%. The immersive business of new terminal devices such as holographic devices is expected to contribute more than half of the average monthly traffic, and ultimately bring a broad market of "100 billion-level terminal connections and trillion-level GB monthly average traffic" to 6G.

Wu Hequan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and chairman of the Future Mobile Communication Forum, believes that compared with 4G, the types of 5G terminals will be further enriched, and there will be a variety of terminals for 6G in the future. Different types of terminals have different utilization rates of 6G network capabilities. Among them, consumer-oriented applications include mobile phones, wearable devices, headsets, home appliances, gateways, etc.; industry-oriented applications include industrial modules, industrial gateways/routers, vehicle terminals, Edge computing, etc., have already appeared in the 5G industrial Internet, and will be more prominent in the 6G era.

Another major application of 6G is the Internet of Things. Wu Hequan said that IoT terminals do not require high bandwidth, but low power consumption, low latency, low cost, large connections, and high density. Therefore, another dimension of 6G terminals is lighter, cheaper, and simpler.

The white paper "6G Typical Scenarios and Key Capabilities" states that 6G will be cross-integrated with information technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, and advanced computing to achieve deep coupling between communication, perception, computing, and control.

Wang Zhiqin, vice president of China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, believes that in the next 10 years, information and communication technology innovation will take technology integration and innovation as the main line, and at the same time use subversive or brand-new technology systems as a supplementary path.

Chen Shanzhi, deputy general manager of China Xinke Group, said that 1G to 4G mobile communications basically serve people, and 5G should serve the industry, empowering industrial transformation and upgrading, and giving birth to digital services. 6G is to solve the problems that 5G has not yet solved in the industry application, and at the same time meet new needs.

Continue to deepen international cooperation

From the perspective of industry insiders, the innovation and development of 6G requires a global consensus on research and development, technology, scenarios, and standardization to continuously expand the space for international cooperation.

During the 2023 Global 6G Technology Conference, the Future Mobile Communication Forum released the "Global Cooperation and Development Initiative for 6G International Cooperation", advocating the creation of a platform for joint research, joint construction and sharing, gathering global wisdom, and promoting complementary advantages, collaborative innovation, resource sharing, and mutual benefit Implement the win-win mechanism, explore a new paradigm of global open cooperation, raise funds and invest in support through multiple channels and methods, and establish 6G international cooperation projects.

"As the global 6G research and development is accelerating, the connotation is becoming clearer, and the application scenarios are becoming clearer, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has started the 6G comprehensive technical route and standard research and judgment work, and the preparation work for the 6G technology selection period is about to start. Fu Jun, deputy secretary-general of the Future Mobile Communications Forum, introduced that in order to promote 6G international multi-party cooperation, the Future Mobile Communications Forum conducted in-depth research on more than 30 domestic and foreign research institutions, universities, and enterprises, which confirmed the domestic and foreign institutions involved in 6G It has always maintained a broad, deep and long-term basis for international cooperation, and has a strong desire for continuous and in-depth cooperation.

Fu Jun said that there are still great uncertainties in 6G research and development, and it is necessary for global wisdom to gather 6G, build a new research and development alliance for joint research, joint construction and sharing, and form a consensus on the research and development, standards, and application scenarios of 6G network technology. Promote the sustainable and healthy development of the global mobile communications industry.

Zhang Guangjun said that focusing on the 6G field, the Ministry of Science and Technology will aim to "build the future digital world infrastructure" and support global scientists to jointly explore and cooperate around vision and application, network and coverage, transmission and devices, etc. International companies, research institutions, and universities are involved.
